When you ask most kids about the name “John Madden” they rattle off the 2019 release date for EA Sports Football’s video game, but the name behind the game means so much more to the history of football. John Madden’s career consisted of being an NFL coach (18 years) and football broadcaster earning him a Gold Jacket and 2006 induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With this popularity, comes a hectic travel schedule, even for this 82 year old who still roams from event to event in the “MaddenCruiser”.
This past weekend at the Hall of Fame Sports Complex a group of young athletes from the Diamond Sports Group got quite the surprise- a first hand tour of the original cruiser. The athlete’s toured the inside in its original condition with vintage upholstery, electronics and living area. They also heard stories of the past from Maddens personal bus driver featuring A-List guests, fan mobbings and how they accrued more than 80k miles per year.
The bus will now be displayed at the Pro Football Hall of Fame so visitors can get an inside look into Madden’s legacy. As one athlete from the Diamond Sports Group said “it was cool to see the name behind the game that we all play!”
